I was looking at a Bay Area butterfly guide yesterday and was paying
particular attention to the larval stage, that is the butterfly as a
caterpillar. We don't always see the caterpillars but they can be every
bit as beautiful as the 'final product.' Here are some photos taken from
the web of some of my favorites. I am relying on the source's
expertise for the correct ID so I hope these are all accurate. From top
to bottom these are:
Gulf Fritillary
California Buckeye
Anise Swallowtail
Western Parsley Swallowtail
Edith's Checkerspot
Monarch
Red Admiral
Orange-barred Sulphur
Western Tussock Moth
And below the caterpillars find photos of the butterflies/moths themselves. They're a bit out of order. Can you match them?
So
the next time you're out in nature, or even in your own garden, keep an
eye out for these little guys. They will no doubt be busy munching on
their preferred plant(s).
Here is the butterfly ID, top to bottom.
Anise Swallowtail
alifornia Buckeye
Edith's Checkerspot
Gulf Fritillary
Monarch
Western Tussock Moth
Orange-barred Sulphur
Red Admiral
Western Parsley Swallowtail
So, how did you do on the test?
